New Retirement Home
Biggest Challenge: I am building a new retirement home on the coast of California
Response from DM:
Thank you for your submission. I am going to make the assumption that this retirement home is for yourself and your family. And I do not know your age, so I don’t know if retirement is just around the corner for you, or if you are being proactive and doing long term planning for yourself. Whether you are building this by yourself, or if you have a builder and an architect, please be aware of and incorporate Universal Design (UD) where you can. Universal Design takes into account what your needs are now, or may be in the future. Whether you have young ones in your home or you plan to age in place, UD is the concept of taking care of everyone’s needs, physically, psychologically, and functionally. There are websites dedicated to Universal Design and many books as well. The concepts take into account the layout of the home and all furnishings and equipment including lighting, flooring, textures, colors, and pathways. Universal Design also considers the garage, the outside of your home, banisters, gardens, and all electronic fixtures. It can include elevators, ramps, and anything else one would need if dealing with an infirmity or disability. Enjoy your research, as I’m sure it will be well worth the effort. And please send me a photo when your home is completed.
