How do you handle elderly relatives who don't understand that some sexual comments are inappropriate?
Donna in Florida, 51
If someone, from your perspective, has made an inappropriate comment, be it sexual, racial, political etc., bring it to the attention of the person in a non-judgmental way. Use "I" messages. By that I mean, "I think this...I have a hard time when you say...I find such comments offensive/hurtful/embarrassing." The main purpose is to gently let the person know that from your set of values or upbringing, the comment is not appropriate. Communicate the "I" message in a quiet and private area. People of any age are often not aware of how their words are impacting or upsetting others.
