Your mother-in-law is trying to help in her own way. It sounds like she wants to be needed and is trying to anticipate the needs of your different family members. She obviously has good energy, so maybe she can do some volunteer work or take on a new hobby. That could satisfy her need to be helpful, and she would genuinely be helping others who could use a friendly visitor or extra gift.
